WIRRAL choirs helped smash a world record to commemorate the release of the Beatles’ first single.

Eight groups from the borough travelled to Liverpool on Friday for the attempt at setting a new record for the highest number of people singing “in the round” at the same time.

They sang Love Me Do – celebrating 50 years since the Fab Four record first went on sale.

The event at Liverpool’s cruise liner terminal, arranged by The Beatles Story tourist attraction, was attended by 1,631 singers – beating the previous record of 897, set in Chicago last year.

Sixty-seven members of Birkenhead High School Academy for Girls’ Intermediate Choir – all from years seven and eight – were among the record breakers.

Matt Lammin, who leads the choir with Jeanette Boyhan and Chris Watson, said: “The day was a great success – it was really well organised by The Beatles Story and Sense of Sound and everyone involved had a fabulous time.

“We contributed 67 singers from year seven and eight and they all loved it and had a great time.

“The year sevens only had two rehearsals since starting the school and it was a fantastic way to inspire them to keep singing.

“It was quite an honour to take part.”

The other Wirral singers were from Creative Community Choir, Upton Hall School, Wirral Grammar School for Girls, Kaboodle Community Choir, West Kirby Light Opera Society, Wirral Community Choir and the Dave Evans Choir.

They were joined for the attempt by Liverpool choirs and Beatles fans from around the world.

Singing in a round involves groups of people singing the same song but starting at different times.

The singers all practised together for an hour before beating the record on their first attempt.

Anna Orford, official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, confirmed the new record for the most people singing in a round.

She said: “The world record was 897 and there were 1,631 singing – so congratulations to everyone. It is a new Guinness World Record.”

The band’s first official gig with Ringo Starr was in Hulme Hall, Port Sunlight on August 18, 1962.

Jerry Goldman of the Beatles Story, said: “It just shows the Beatles touch everybody still today– it is probably stronger now than ever.

“You find new audiences. We have had people here from China and I have had Chinese television telling me how important The Beatles are there now.”
