Radio 4 PM Show

Our music department at Birkenhead High School Academy hosted the first GDST Young Musician and Young Vocalist Of The Year competition this week. Musicians from across the GDST’s 26 schools across the country descended on the school for the event. As well as competing, the young musicians performed a new piece together, which was written especially for the event by the highly-acclaimed composer Emily Howard who is an old girl of the school.

The competition drew interest from the Radio 4 PM Show, who used the competition as an opportunity to visit our school to use us as a case study as part of their piece on the state of music in schools. I was unsure what the consequences of having Radio 4’s Andrew Bomford in my ukulele lesson and vocal rehearsal would be, but pleasingly, the result of his visit was very positive for our department. The girls he spoke to certainly managed to eloquently convey their upbeat opinions alongside our inspirational director of music, Chris Watson.
