On Saturday 8th July, the choir that I established earlier this year, Over The Water, appeared on Pitch Battle on BBC One. It was a fantastic experience to be part of this show and our 20-strong group absolutely loved the whole process. Presented by Mel Giedroyc and djudicated by Gareth Malone, Kelis and guest-judge Seal, the show was a dynamic and glorious celebration of singing. We featured in the fourth episode of the first series.
We sang as part of the ‘Survival’ themed opening number with the other five choirs then went on to perform my arrangement of Cake By The Ocean. We went on to be knocked out following our ‘Foreign Riff-Off’ battle with the Bristol Suspensions, but when we watched the show back, we were really proud of ourselves! The most difficult part of it for us was that all our material was fully-choreographed.
I feel that our main-selling point was the diversity within our group. We went in to the show with the intention of inspiring others to take up singing and we wanted them to watch us an think: ‘I can do that’! We had a 17 year old in the group and members in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s right up to 64-year old Len!
Special mention must go to all our soloists; I feel that one of our main strengths as a group is that we work so well together but we also have a choir full of soloists. Across the material we performed on the show, we were able to feature cameo solos from Amy Chalmers, Vicky Burr, Len Higginson, Molly Daniel, Joanne Steel, Emma Bispham, Heather Tomlinson, Dionne McHugh, Ben Turner and myself. Extra special mention to Molly Daniel for her French rap, which I delegated to her despite the fact that she doesn’t speak French, and Austin Hewitt for his German rap, which I delegated to him despite the fact he doesn’t speak German!!
Huge thank you to our vocal coach, Claire Wheeler from the Swingle Singers and our choreographer, Matt Flint. We gained so much from working with these fantastic people as well as many other professionals behind the scenes. Deke Sharon was an inspiration and we hope to come across him again for sure!More +
