Sense of Sound Singers in Hannover
Sense of Sound Singers, led by Jennifer John, travelled to Hannover mid-June to perform at ‘Chortage Hannover’, a choir festival funded and supported by Unesco. Both Liverpool and Hannover are Unesco cities of music, which is how our trip came about. We had a fantastic weekend and have come away feeling creatively-nourished and inspired!
The singers involved were Jennifer John, Perri Alleyne-Hughes, Emily Jackson, Mersey Wylie, Dionne McHugh, Joanne Head, Kev Grannell and myself. Our intention was to create a set that showcased all our voices and a set that had a narrative tackling the current political climate.
On Saturday 17th June, we performed at Galerie Herrenhausen alongside a number of fabulous German choirs. The quality and quantity of vocal groups in Hannover was astounding! We were the final act of the first of a double-header of concerts and we performed the following set to a sellout crowd –
Woman (written & arranged by Mersey Wylie, lead vocal: Mersey Wylie)
Sign O’ The Times (by Prince / arranged by Jennifer John, lead vocal: Kev Grannell)
Bluebird (written & arranged by Jennifer John, lead vocal: Jennifer John)
Then (written & arranged by Perri Alleyne-Hughes, lead vocal: Perri Alleyne-Hughes)
Sewing The Seeds Of Love (by Tears for Fears / arranged by Emily Jackson, lead vocal: Emily Jackson)
The following afternoon we were lucky enough to perform a joint concert with Sub5, a wonderful five-piece a cappella choir from Hannover. This concert took place at Pauluskirche, again to a full audience. We performed a longer set including the majority of the songs we sang the day before along with the following –
Hurts (by Emeli Sande / arranged by Matt Lammin, lead vocal: Dionne McHugh)
What’s Goin’ On/What’s Happening’ Brother/Inner City Blues (by Marvin Gaye / arranged by Emily Jackson, lead vocal: Emily Jackson)
Orion (written & arranged by Perri Alleyne-Hughes, lead vocal: Perri Alleyne-Hughes)
I’d Rather Go Blind (by Etta James / arranged by Jennifer John, lead vocal: Joanne Head)
Never Say Never (by Basement Jaxx / arranged by Jennifer John, lead vocal: Matt Lammin)
